In comparison that's around what Rogue One and Last Jedi made in their fourth weekend and what Force Awakens made on its fifth. While it doesn't grab the record for biggest second weekend drop for a Star Wars film ("congrats" Last Jedi with your 67.5% drop) it is truly awful for a film that opened so much lower than expectations. And let's not forget Deadpool 2 moved away from this weekend because of fear that Solo would be so big it would cause Deadpool 2 to bomb. I've heard a lot of people saying that perhaps Solo bombed because of a crowded market but to me this weekend shows that theory doesn't hold a lot of water. It had zero major competition this weekend, no excuse for families on holiday, and the entire weekend is down $80M from last year showing there's room to expand here. It will be interesting to see what the vacuum of this failure has created for films like Ocean's 8 next weekend and especially Incredibles 2 which will feel like welcome relief for all the families who've not had a universal let's all go to the movies choice since Avengers. As it stands for Solo there really is no hope left for it. It had all the room in the world this weekend and still couldn't even manage a good return. Lucasfilm must be glad they now have a year and a half break to figure out what went wrong with Solo because if the same thing happens to Episode IX I think there may be legit riots in their buildings.Adrift - Well Adrift it seems is another in a long line of STX disappointments as while it was the biggest new release of the week it managed to only come in at #3 with $11.5M. The film, which is loosely based on the story of two people in 1983 who were trapped out on the ocean after a hurricane who have to find their way to shore, was trying to get some of that sweet Mountains Between Us money but couldn't really crack it opening under expectations despite good reviews. The film also scored a pretty middling B on Cinemascore so don't really expect this to have a good mid-range run where it could struggle to pass its $35M budget.Upgrade - A surprise in the box office and a surprise to me as the guy who makes Official Discussions, Upgrade seemed to pinpoint target market well opening above expectations at #6 with $4.4M. The film, written and directed by Saw veteran Leigh Whannell, was released by Blumhouse Tilt, an offshoot of Bumhouse that focuses on smaller releases and quick VOD plays. As such their marketing tends to be less extreme and instead very laser focused and in this Upgrade did very well with shall we say the r/movies market (young males) who made up 64% of the market for the film. This is also the second highest opening for a BH Tilt film behind The Darkness ($4.9M) which opened in more theaters. Like most films Upgrade carries a tiny budget of around $3M-$5M which it will easily make back in a box office run and then VOD will be a solid minor earner for the film. It's a good time for BH Tilt who haven't had a success since The Belko Experiment last year and shows that BH is at its best when producing original films with good marketable premises for cheap.Action Point - You know it's a bad sign when the studio doesn't show a film to critics before release. You know it's a really bad sign when the day a film is supposed to premiere on Thursday night the studio just ups and pulls all the showings. And you know it's a horrendous sign when the only marketing for the film seems to be come see how Johnny Knoxville get horribly injured. All that to say it shouldn't be too surprising when I say that Action Point had one of the worst openings of all time at #9 with $2.3M. That's the 23rd worst opening ever for a film opening in over 2,000 theaters (last year's Gringo opened better and that movie doesn't even exist). It's by far the worst opening for a Johnny Knoxville film in wide release and far below the previous Jackass family of films. The film based on a real dangerous amusement park of the same name featured real stunts from the crew but it didn't impress critics (who tend to be more kind to the Jackass films) as it scored a terrible 17% when it finally was reviewed. The film carries a pretty modest budget of $19M but now that might as well be $190M for how far away the film is from reaching it and I don't think any amount of testicular trauma from JK will help it reach that far.Films Reddit Wants to FollowThis is a segment where we keep a weekly tally of currently showing films that aren't in the Top 5 that fellow redditors want updates on.
