Warning: Suburbicon is not what you think it is

I’ve been looking forward to finally seeing the Matt Damon flick “Suburbicon” since i saw the trailer. I had seen the reviews, heard it wasn’t so good, but wanted to see it anyway. I thought the premise of shrinking him down to live in a tiny town was light-hearted enough and seemed like it could be clever. I rented it on iTunes to watch on a plane. Popped back a couple of drinks and was ready to rip on the critic’s negativity.Boy was I wrong. The movie starts with an advertisement about how great the town Suburbicon is. But quickly dives in to the racial unrest of the 1950’s. I think, “huh, that seems like an interesting choice that was left out of the trailer. But maybe that’s why Damon gets shrunk down into the Suburbicon town”.I have another drink.“This movie is completely different from what I remember from the trailers” I keep thinking to myself. There is a murder plot early on. The story seems to be centered around Damon’s kid. All the racial elements. “I’m almost an hour in and they haven’t even mentioned shrinking him into a new “concept town”Way later than I should have, I decided to text my wife (some airlines let you text in flight) that this movie is stupid and it makes no sense. “The trailer makes it seem like it’s about a shrunken town with shirt buttons the size of cars!” That’s when she texted that “Suburbicon is not Downsizing” ...I had no idea “Suburbicon” even existed. And I realized I’m an idiot for letting this movie get almost an hour in before I realized it was a different movie all togetherSo I finished Suburbicon and thought it was pretty dumb. Almost no one gets shrunk in the whole movie.Still looking forward to seeing Downsizing1/10 via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2IIMmNV
