Which trope annoys you the most?

For me it's the secrets/knowledge has power trope that's used to justify why none of the characters in a book share any information with each other. I couldn't tell you how many books I've read where the central conflict, or even a minor conflict/situation that ends up being central to the plot could have been resolved in less than 2 minutes if the people who were involved (who are often friends or at least associates) just sat down and talked to each other. The most recent and probably most egregious example of this that I've come across recently are Robin Hobb's FitzChivalry books. How much damage could have been avoided if Fitz had just sat down and had an actual discussion, like normal people do, with Chade or Verity or Molly or Dutiful or Shrewd or Burritch etc, etc? It's a trope I find incredibly annoying and seems to be used a lot in Fantasy (The Dresden Files is another example although not nearly as bad IMO), or it could well be that it seems that way because I read more fantasy than any other genre.Over to y'all. via /r/books https://ift.tt/2PHI8so
