Who Framed Roger Rabbit is an unimpeachable, timeless classic

I just rewatched it after about 15- 20 years as part of my quarantine trawl through my collection and wow, does it hold up.We begin with an animated short which, in and of itself, feels like a classic of the genre. Then, we pan out to see that we are on a set and it feels like we’re stepping seamlessly into a new world, somewhat like Dorothy’s entrance into Oz.The attention to detail paid to the toons’ interactions with real-world items is unbelievable: the way Roger’s handprints are left on Teddy’s chair, the way the weasels wave around real guns, and the movement of the handcuffs holding Eddie and Roger together. I spent half the film audibly saying ‘wow’, like a total goof, in response to these tiny but effective moments. That the filmmakers had the audacity to use a dynamic, moving camera, with the consequence of different angles and shadows being required adds another layer to it all.I also love that it holds its own as a film noir, in its own way. Hoskins is an absolute treat as a 40s noir protagonist, gulping down whiskey in a way that probably wouldn’t be allowed in a modern family film, as he finds himself inexorably drawn to doing the right thing.And the very fact that they managed to get the rights to include both Disney and WB characters is absolutely bonkers - and almost unimaginable today.If you’ve left it a while since you’ve seen it - or if it’s somehow escaped your attention - treat yourself and give it a watch. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3betvXi
